YoFont vs Calligraphr

Hands-on tested · July 2026 · sources linked below

These tools answer different questions. Calligraphr digitizes letters you draw yourself: print a template, fill it in by hand, scan it back — full manual control, roughly 75 characters on the free plan and 480 on Pro ($8/mo). YoFont generates the whole typeface from a description or a reference photo: up to 19 languages across 9 scripts, three weights, every glyph editable afterwards — the first font is free. If you want to draw every letter yourself, Calligraphr is the classic choice; if you want a finished multi-language family in about a minute, that is what YoFont does.

To be fair: Calligraphr is the honest classic for digitizing your own handwriting exactly as you drew it, character by character. Choose it when the hand-drawn imperfection IS the product and you have the hours. YoFont also builds a font from your handwriting photo — and then extends it to languages you never wrote.

Frequently asked questions

Can both turn my handwriting into a font?

Yes, differently. Calligraphr: you draw each character into a template — exact but manual, limited to what you draw. YoFont: photograph a few lines and AI extrapolates a complete multi-script family in that style.

Which supports more languages?

Calligraphr covers whatever characters you draw yourself. YoFont generates full character sets for up to 19 languages across 9 writing systems automatically.

Is Calligraphr AI-based?

No — it is a template digitizer, not a generator. That is not a flaw, just a different tool: full manual control instead of generation.
