How to make a font from an image, step by step

You have a picture with lettering you want to keep using — a logo you own, a poster you designed, a sign you photographed on holiday. The letters exist, but only as pixels: you cannot type with them. Turning that image into a font takes four steps, and none of them require type-design software.

1. Pick the cleanest picture you have. Letters should be sharp, roughly horizontal and big enough to see their edges. Two or three words in a distinctive style beat a whole paragraph of blurry small text — the style is what gets extended, not the wording.
2. Upload it and describe what you want, if you want. The picture alone is enough. A short text prompt on top of it steers the result: say “heavier”, “rounder corners”, “condensed” and the draft moves that way. Choose the languages you need and up to three weights.
3. Check the draft where it matters. Look at the letters your picture never contained. If the sample said “SUMMER SALE”, the model still had to invent a g, a q and an ampersand from the logic of the style. That is where a font from an image is made or broken.
4. Fix anything you disagree with, then export. Any single glyph can be redrawn or regenerated on its own, without touching the rest. What you download are ordinary font files — TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 — that install like any font you have ever bought.

Which images work, and which ones will disappoint you

The result depends far more on the source than on any setting. Here is what actually comes out of the usual kinds of pictures people upload.

• A logo or wordmark — the best case. Custom lettering, deliberately drawn, high contrast, few distractions. This is exactly the situation where no existing font will ever match and generating one is the only honest answer.
• A poster or album cover — very good, provided you crop to the headline. Leave the body text out; mixing two typefaces in one reference gives you a font that is neither.
• A photo of a shop sign or a wall — good, if you shoot straight on. A steep angle stretches the letters, and the font inherits that distortion. Step back and zoom rather than tilting the camera.
• A screenshot — good, and often better than a photo, because the pixels are clean. Take it at the largest size the screen will show.
• A tiny, compressed thumbnail — this is the one that disappoints. If you cannot see where a stroke thickens and thins, neither can anything else. Find a bigger version of the same picture first; it is worth the five minutes.

PNG, JPG, SVG — what to upload and what comes back

PNG, JPG and WEBP upload directly, and PNG is the safest of the three because it has no compression artefacts around the edges of letters — exactly the places that carry the style. If your lettering lives in a vector file, export it as a flat picture at a generous size and upload that; nothing is lost, because what matters is the shape, not the path data.

Whatever goes in, the same thing comes out: real font files. So “image to TTF”, “PNG to font” and “SVG to font” all end in the same place — an installable family in TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2, ready for a desktop, a website or a print job.

The manual route: Photoshop, Illustrator, FontForge

There is an older way to do this, and it is worth knowing what it costs. You open the picture in Photoshop, clean it up, trace each letter into vectors in Illustrator, import the outlines into FontForge or Glyphs, set the sidebearings, kern the pairs and export. For twenty-six uppercase letters a careful designer needs a day. For a family covering upper and lower case, digits, punctuation and accents, closer to a week.

The catch is not the tracing — it is everything the picture does not contain. Your logo has seven letters; a working font needs the rest of the alphabet drawn in the same hand, plus spacing and kerning that hold together at every size. That invention is the actual craft, and it is the part the manual route makes slowest.

Generating the family and then correcting it flips the order: you start from a complete draft and spend your attention on the letters that are wrong, instead of drawing the ones that are obvious. If you prefer the manual route, nothing here stops you — export the draft and take it into your own editor.

Is it legal to make a font from an image?

In most jurisdictions the shape of letters is not itself protected — what copyright covers is the font software, the file. That is why so many typefaces exist as near-identical twins under different names. Generating new font files inspired by a style you saw creates new, original files rather than copying anyone’s.

Two things are genuinely different, and worth keeping straight. A brand’s name and its wordmark are trademarks: you can build a font in the spirit of a famous logo, but using it to pass yourself off as that brand is a separate problem and not a typographic one. And the rules vary — Germany, for instance, does protect typeface designs in a way most countries do not. If a project is commercially serious, treat this page as a starting point and your lawyer as the finishing one.
