How to make a font online, step by step
A font maker is not a font editor. An editor hands you an empty grid and a pen; a maker hands you a finished family and lets you argue with it. That difference decides how long the work takes — minutes against weeks — and it is why the steps below start at the end rather than the beginning.
- Describe the voice, not the shapes. Write what the typeface should do in a sentence: “friendly rounded sans for a kids’ app”, “narrow industrial grotesque for packaging”. Naming the job gives the draft more to work with than naming a font you half-remember.
- Or start from a picture. A photo of hand lettering, a logo, a poster — anything with letterforms in it. The maker reads the weight, contrast and rhythm from what you attach and extends that style to the characters the image never had.
- Choose weights and languages up front. Thin, Regular and Bold drawn together stay a family; bolted on later they drift. The same is true across scripts — Latin and Cyrillic in one pass hold their proportions, in two passes they rarely do.
- Correct, then export. Type a real sentence and look at the rhythm, not at single letters. Anything that bothers you is regenerated or hand-fixed per glyph, and what you download is TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 that install like any other font.
Font maker, font creator, font generator — is there a difference?
In search these three words mean the same thing, but on the web they lead to two very different products. Most results marked “font generator” convert your text into lookalike Unicode symbols you paste into a bio. Nothing is created: the characters already existed in the standard, and you cannot install them or use them in a document.
A real maker outputs a font file. The test is simple — if the result cannot be installed on your system and picked in Word, Figma or CSS, no font was made. Everything on this page produces installable files, which is also why it takes a minute rather than an instant.
What a generated family actually contains
Letters are the visible part and the smallest problem. A usable font also needs digits, punctuation, accents for every language it claims, spacing that works at text size and OpenType features so shapers do their job — without the language tags a browser applies no features at all, and text in Arabic or Devanagari falls apart.
All of that is drawn and assembled for you, across up to 60 languages in 10 writing systems. You keep the part that needs an opinion: which letters are wrong, and how the whole thing reads in your own words.
When making a font beats buying one
Buying wins when you need a proven text face for long reading and the licence is affordable. Making wins on three counts: nobody else has it, there is no per-seat or per-view licence to track, and coverage is yours to decide — a matching family across Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic and CJK is rare on the market and expensive when it exists.
The first font costs nothing, so the comparison is cheap to run: make one, install it, set your own text in it, and judge against whatever you were about to license.
